Devastating Update on Cargo Plane Crash: Fatalities Increases to 13

The tally of fatalities due to the freight aircraft that ignited and plummeted has now risen to 13, as confirmed by official statements.

City Leader's Statement

“On my way to the Workers’ memorial service, I received word of a 13th person that died as a consequence of the aircraft accident,” expressed the city mayor in a public communication. “My heart is with the families, friends and colleagues of all who were killed in this recent calamity. We will get through this as one.”

Victims Named

A release from UPS named the flight crew aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.

“Our sympathies are extended to all UPSer who has been impacted and everyone in our community area – helping you and guaranteeing you get the attention and aid you need is our priority,” the organization’s statement stated.

Investigation Findings

Government officials revealed that the freight aircraft’s port side wing caught fire and an motor fell off soon after takeoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, causing the jet to fall and erupt into a blaze.

The NTSB announced it is investigating the jet’s maintenance history, that was in Texas for fixes a period prior to the crash.

Aviation records indicated the jet was on the runway in the Texas city from 3 September to 18 October.

“We are cognizant that this jet was present in the facility,” remarked an investigator on Thursday, not giving a exact time frame. “We will examine each aspect of repairs that was completed, even the San Antonio time, all the way to the time of the trip.”

Findings of Key Evidence

The pilot’s recorder and information unit were found, and the engine was found on the airfield.

The devices – referred to as flight recorders – were constructed to survive collision damage and severe temperatures from fires, and they appeared to be intact when located within the crash debris. Authorities plan on analyzing data from the black boxes.

Aircraft’s final recorded information displayed an height of 475 feet and a rate of 210 miles per hour prior to the impact.

Maintenance Background

According to Federal Aviation Administration documents dated last month, a crack on a component within the center wing fuel tank needed fixes.

Singapore-based ST Engineering, which said it supplies airframe maintenance for the carrier’s jet and operates a maintenance center in Texas, refused to comment, but said it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities approached it.

Operations Resume

In the meantime, UPS Worldport services continued Wednesday night with its express or evening operation, official Jim Mayer said. All three runways at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also back in operation.

The UPS package handling facility in this location is the organization’s most significant. The facility employs more than a large number of people in the area, processes numerous flights each day and sorts over four hundred thousand items an hour.

Public Support

A memorial was held on the night of 6 November by the regional Teamsters Union, which supports employees at the Louisville airport, the firm’s biggest air cargo hub.

Worker representatives, which represents UPS workers, began the vigil with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the rough hour of the crash previously.

“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unforeseen,” the mayor told the assembly of 200. “No one had a opportunity to bid farewell to each of those who we have lost.”
