Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
